Have Questions About Songbird Sourdough? We Have Answers.
Everything You Want to Know About Our Bread, Ingredients, Ordering, and More
Sourdough is a little different from the bread you’ll find on a grocery store shelf, and you may have a few questions before placing an order. Here are some of the things people ask about Songbird Sourdough, how our products are made, and what makes our baking process a little different.
About The Sourdough
Everything is made with care and attention to the ingredients. Debra mills many of her own grains and uses high-quality ingredients, including all organic grains and flours. If it’s not something she would happily eat herself, she won’t sell it.
Sourdough is bread made through a natural fermentation process using a sourdough starter instead of commercial yeast. The process takes time, often much longer than traditional bread, but that time helps develop the bread’s flavor and texture.
Traditional sourdough can have some advantages over conventional bread, largely because of its long fermentation process. During fermentation, naturally occurring wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria help break down some of the starches and proteins in the dough.
This can make sourdough easier for some people to digest and may also help with mineral absorption and blood sugar response. Sourdough fermentation can also create compounds that support a healthy gut microbiome.
Of course, everyone is different, and sourdough isn’t a cure-all or automatically “healthy” just because it’s sourdough. What goes into the bread matters, too. That’s one reason we put so much thought into the grains and ingredients we use.
Good sourdough can’t be rushed. The dough goes through a natural fermentation process that takes time and careful attention. Mixing, stretching, fermentation, proofing, and finally baking can take days to complete.
Ingredients And Baking
Yes, Songbird Sourdough mills many of the grains fresh. Debra enjoys working with a variety of grains, including rye, einkorn, khorasan, and emmer.
All of the grains and flours used by Songbird Sourdough are organic. Debra is particular about the ingredients she uses and believes that good food starts with good ingredients.
No. We don’t use artificial preservatives, artificial flavors, or unnecessary additives. Our sourdough is made with simple ingredients and traditional baking methods. The long fermentation process takes time, but that’s part of what makes our sourdough so special.
No. While sourdough bread is at the heart of Songbird Sourdough, Debra also creates other sourdough-based baked goods and seasonal items. What’s available may change, so check the Shop page for current offerings.
Shopping And Availability
Not always. Songbird Sourdough offers a variety of breads and baked goods, but availability can change based on the baking schedule, ingredients, and what is currently being made. The best place to see what’s available is the Shop page.
The easiest way to see what’s currently available and place an order is through the Songbird Sourdough Shop page. Since products are baked in small batches, availability may change.

Songbird Sourdough is based in Somerset, Massachusetts. We are a Pre-Order Bake Shop. All items that you purchase from us must be ordered ahead of time. We do not have a walk-in retail bakery where you can purchase items from a case.
Food Safety And Bread Care
Yes. Songbird Sourdough operates out of a licensed kitchen that is inspected by the Somerset Board of Health.
We also follow Massachusetts requirements for homemade food production through the state’s Residential Kitchen framework under 105 CMR 590, the Massachusetts State Retail Food Code.
Food safety is an important part of every bake. Songbird Sourdough is made in a licensed kitchen that follows proper food handling, sanitation, storage, and preparation practices. From caring for the sourdough starter to preparing, baking, and packaging each product, we take pride in creating food that is made with both quality and safety in mind.
For the best texture and flavor, store your bread at room temperature in a bread bag, paper bag, or bread box. Avoid sealing a crusty loaf in plastic right away, as it can soften the crust. If you won’t finish it within a few days, freezing it is a great option.
Absolutely. Sourdough freezes very well. Slice the loaf before freezing if you’d like the convenience of taking out a piece or two at a time.
